Day 1: Blessing to Be a Blessing

Read:
Genesis 12:1-9

Genesis 12 | NIV Bible | YouVersion

When God called Abram to leave his home and family in the land of Ur of the Chaldeans, God told him that He would make Abram into a great nation. God’s plan was to create a nation set apart to lead the world back to the God who created and loved them.  God promised Abram, “I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.... All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”  This sounds like a wonderful promise, but it wasn’t easy.  God asked Abram to leave the world he had known and journey into the unknown.  God didn’t even tell him where he was going.  He had to simply to trust and obey.

And so Abram set out on his long journey of faith into the unknown.  There in the wilderness, God met him, leading and guiding him all the way to Canaan.  God met Abram again, promising, “I will give this land to your descendants.”  And there, Abram built an altar, a pile of stones where he worshipped God, a place of significance, for remembering what God had done and what He had promised.

Has God asked you to step into the unknown?  He longs to pour out His blessings on you.  But not just for your good, although He always has your good in mind.  God blesses you so that you can be a blessing to others.  What He has done in you, He can now do through you to bless others who may be facing similar trials.

Sometimes that journey into the unknown can be hard.  We wrestle with doubts and difficulties.  This is why following Abram’s example to build an altar can be helpful.  We need those milestones in our lives that we can look back and remember what God has done, what He has promised.  Whether it’s a journal, a collection of mementoes, or some other form, keep a record of those milestone encounters with God, so that in times of trouble or doubt, you can look back and remind yourself of the faithfulness of God.

God wants to bless you so that you can be a blessing.  He asks only for your faith and obedience.  Ask God to guide and direct you, to show you where you should go.  It may not be easy, but I promise you, when you follow where God is leading, He will take you on the adventure of a lifetime!
