Day 3: God Will Provide

Read: Genesis 22

Genesis 22 | NIV Bible | YouVersion

Finally!  After 25 long years of waiting for God to fulfill His promise, Isaac, the child of promise was born!  By this time, Abraham was 100 years old!  Can you imagine how thrilled Abraham and Sarah were?  How they must have doted on that boy!

Then one day God spoke to Abraham and asked him to sacrifice his son, the very son for whom Abraham had waited for for 25 years!  I can’t even imagine what must have gone through Abraham’s mind!  But the Bible simply tells us that the next morning, Abraham gathered everything he needed together, and set off into the wilderness with his beloved son of promise, Isaac.

Think of what that journey must have been like: a three-day journey into the desert, and with every step, Abraham could hardly breathe.  Sacrifice his son? Would God actually allow him to kill the hope through whom all God’s promises were to come? Or would God raise Isaac from the dead?  Whatever the case, Abraham acted in absolute faith that God knew exactly what He was doing.

They reached the foot of Mount Moriah, and Abraham, taking the wood, the fire, a knife, and Isaac, left the donkey and servants behind, and headed up the mountain.  Then, Isaac looked around and asked, “I see the wood, and I see the fire, but where is the sacrifice?”  Abraham’s simple reply was both prophetic and full of faith.  “God will provide.”

This is the first time we see the name of Jehovah Jireh, “The Lord My Provider.”  Before God ever asked this great sacrifice of Abraham, He had already provided.  He had already sent the ram on its journey to the mountain in the wilderness.  He had already grown the thicket that would ensnare the ram.  He had already made the mountain.  God is not limited by time and space.  His provision is already there when you need it.

We often say that God was just in time, but this actually isn’t correct.  God is never last minute, or just in time.  He has already been at work, providing for us, days, weeks, months, years, perhaps even generations before, preparing for us exactly what we need for exactly when we need it!  He truly is Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides!

What do you need from the Lord today?  Begin to thank Jehovah Jireh, the God who is already at work making provision for what you need.  What you truly need will be revealed at exactly the right time, in exactly the right way.  Even though you may not see the answers yet, thank God in advance for the wonderful provision that He is busy preparing for you behind the scenes.
